POSITION SUMMARY:

Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and in surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

GENERAL WORK SCHEDULE:

Up to 25 hours per week, morning, afternoon, and evening positions are available. Must be available to work weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.    Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.

2.    Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.

3.    Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.

4.    Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.

5.    Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.

6.    Accurately records pool temperature, pool chemical qualities, and maintains other records as required.  Takes appropriate action to resolve issues.

7.    Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.

8.    Follows department protocol to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces.  Maintains the cleanliness and organization of program/work areas.

9.    Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.

10.  Maintains all required certifications, attends staff training sessions to practice skills and learn program standard.

11.  Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1.           Must be at least 16 years old.
  2.           American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification.
  3.           American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institute BLS for Lifeguards, First Aid, Oxygen Administration certifications.
  4.          Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness.
